A591 voted best road by sat nav users
With its green fells, rocky peaks and tranquil waters, it’s no wonder the A591 has been declared the best road in Britain.
The 21-mile stretch, between Windermere and Keswick, was awarded the accolade after coming out at the top of a YouGov poll for satellite navigation manufacturer Garmin.
The survey asked 2,010 Brits to nominate the best and worst roads in the country.
The A591, which takes in both Ambleside and Grasmere, up Dunmail Raise before reaching Keswick, was followed, in second place, by the A82 from Glasgow to Fort William.
Third place went to A38 between Exeter and Plymouth.
But neither could compete with the experience of driving past the north eastern shores of Windermere, Rydal Water, the picturesque village of Grasmere, Helm Crag, the quiet waters of Thirlmere and Helvellyn. Ian Stephens, chief executive of Cumbria Tourism, was delighted with the findings.
“The distinct advantage the Lake District has over many other destinations is that it is compact and offers amazing views around just about every corner,” he said.
“There are many other areas of Cumbria which offer equally spectacular scenery too.
“Naturally, we would encourage people to stop over in one of the villages along the route- not only will this allow people to fully appreciate the views, it will also be more relaxing and safer.”
Claigh Haigh, from Garmin, said: “The stunning natural beauty of the Lake District and the A591’s proximity to some of the prettiest scenery in the area make it an unsurprising choice as the route for Britain’s best drive.”
